Pre-porting Numbers Checklist

This is an article that covers the main things to check off before porting numbers over to SIPTrunk.com

Why Do I Need to Port my Numbers from My Old SIP Provider?

When leaving an old phone provider, the phone numbers will need to be moved over to your new SIP provider. This is needed in order to ensure that the numbers are live.

Call Flow Built Out

The desired call flow should be built out in full, including inbound rules for the number being ported, into the bvoip phone system prior to porting numbers to prevent any call flow based issues.

Phone Provisioning Completed

The desired phones should be provisioned with the call flow being completed prior to porting numbers to prevent any call flow based issues.

What to Have Ready for Porting

In order to port numbers, the following item will be required:

  • A Letter of Authorization, which will require a digital signature.
  • A Security PIN (if set up with your provider).

The following items are not required but strongly suggested to ensure the port request is processed without a hitch. If these items are not provided with the initial request, the SIPTrunk.com Porting team may reach out and request them if they are needed to complete the port request.

  • A current bill copy from your provider.
  • A CSR (Customer Service Record) from your provider.

SMS Portability

If you are porting over SMS based numbers, the desired number would need to have SMS functionality reinstated through SIPTrunk.com. The SMS functionality can not be done in advance of the port being completed.

How to Port

Once the desired call flow has been established and the phones have been provisioned, the number port request can then be done. For instructions on how to start the porting process, please see the Porting Over Phone Numbers article

What if my Porting Application is Rejected?

The losing carrier or current service provider that has control of your numbers can reject the number porting application for a range of reasons. Should your porting application be rejected, you will need to contact the losing carrier and request changes to your account to allow the port to process.

Should I Cancel my Existing Services Once I Submit a Port?

No. It is very important that you do not cancel any services with the losing or current service provider until you have confirmation from the new SIP provider's porting team that the porting process has completed successfully.
